FIRE & SMOKE DETECTOR ALARM MONITORING

SMOKE ALARMS

Picture
The Ontario Fire Code requires that all homes have a working smoke alarm installed on every floor level. This applies to all single family, semi-detached and town homes, whether owner occupied or rented.

With monitored smoke detectors from AHS Security, you'll never run the risk of becoming a victim because you forgot to change the batteries. In the event of a fire, a panicked child or adult, especially one suffering from lack of oxygen, may not have the presence of mind, the time, or the ability to call the fire department. Monitored smoke and fire detection systems are a call to the fire department automatically, saving vital time that could also save lives.Because a monitored smoke detection system from AHS Security is ALWAYS ON it will:

·         Automatically relay an emergency signal to the central station and ultimately to the fire     department

·         Emit an ear piercing siren that can be heard virtually anywhere in the house.

·         Work whether you are at home or away

·         Work if you are injured or incapacitated

FIRE SAFETY TIPS

SMOKING

Careless use and disposal of smokers’ materials is a major cause of residential fires, injuries and deaths.
• Never smoke when you are in bed
• Use deep, non-combustible ashtrays and empty into non-combustible containers such as a coffee tin and allow to cool for at least 24hrs prior to throwing out.
• Always check seat cushions and floors for cigarette butts prior to leaving the house or going to bed
• Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children

CANDLES
The popularity of candles has increased dramatically over the past number of years and so has the number of fires caused by candles.
• Never leave a candle unattended for any reason. If you are leaving the room, extinguish the candle
• Always place the candle on a solid, level surface, away from windows and all combustible materials including drapes and curtains
• Candle can be easily knocked over, keep children and pets away from lit candles
• Never carry a lit candle
• Always use the proper type of holder for the candle

COOKING
Cooking fires are one of the leading causes of house fires in the City of Hamilton and can result in the loss of your home, personal possessions or as in some cases, the loss of life.
• Never leave cooking unattended. If you must leave the kitchen, turn off the appliance
• Always keep a large lid near the stove when you are cooking and if the pot catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove
·          Unplug kettles, frying pans and other appliances when not in use
• Always wear short or tight fitting sleeves while cooking
• Never attempt to carry a burning pot or pan
• Never use water on a grease fire. Consider purchasing a U.L.C. listed multi-purpose type (ABC rated) portable fire extinguisher and learn how to use the extinguisher, so that if needed, you are prepared

ELECTRICAL
Faulty electrical wiring and appliances are a major cause of structure fires in the City of Hamilton.
• Standard electrical circuits are protected by a 15amp over-current device, such as a fuse or circuit breaker. Replacing these with one of larger amperage will overload and subsequently over heat the wiring which could cause a fire.
• The use of extension cords as permanent wiring is a violation under the Ontario Fire Code. Physical damage can occur to the insulation on extension cords running under furniture and carpets causing not only a shock hazard, but also a fire hazard. Extension cords that are coiled up may overheat, also causing a potential fire
• Have electrical equipment and wiring serviced only by qualified persons

PLAN YOUR ESCAPE
Do you know what to do if a fire occurs in your home?
Now is the time to sit down with your family and prepare a family fire escape plan.
• Include all family members in the development of your escape plan
• Determine two ways out of every room in your home
• Feel all doors before opening. If the door feels normal, open it with caution
• Crawl low if you encounter smoke or heat conditions
• Have a specified meeting place outside of your home for all family members
• Call 911 from a neighbour’s house or other safe area
• Do not go back into your home for any reason. Once you are out, stay out
